GFAI membership

The GFAI (Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Angewandten Informationsforschung e.V. – Society for the Promotion of Applied Information Sciences) was founded as a non-profit organization in 1984. Its charter requires the GFAI to promote applied information research in the Saarland and hence the transfer of knowledge and technology between science, industry and authorities.

Among the founding members are companies and insitutions that have a particular interest in promoting scientific activities in the Saarland (especially in information science) and want to make a contribution to boost the transfer of scientific research results into practice.

At general assemblies and board meetings representatives of the Saarland University and the Ministry of economy and research for the Saarland also participate. Other members of the GFAI (also from other federal states) belong to companies that have a particular interest in the content of the subjects concerned.

In April 1985 the GFAI founded, as its executive body, the Institute of the GFAI at the Saarland University (Institut der GFAI an der Universität des Saarlandes - IAI). Together with the Saarland University, IAI addresses questions concerning information and communication sciences. Through application-oriented work the use of the research results by industry, science and the administrative authorities is promoted (knowledge and technology transfer). These technological advances are made public in an appropriate form.

Following become aware in detail of IAI’s charter, the Senate of the Saarland University gave IAI permission to add the words "at the Saarland University" to its title. The Ministry of Economy and Research supports IAI and accords it an annual deficit financing in line with institutional aid. Furthermore, it promotes the filing of applications to the European Commission and IAI’s participation at trade fairs.

Today IAI is renowned for its software tools for the spelling and grammar checking of text documents (e.g. Duden Korrektor), the linguistic intelligence of which greatly exceeds that of other systems currently available on the market. Many companies worldwide use custom-tailored solutions for terminology, consistency and style checks in order to ensure the linguistic quality of their texts (CLAT  software – Controlled Language Authoring Technology).

Another key development area of IAI is its focus on the indexing and classification of the content of text documents for libraries, specialized information centers and associations. Thus, IAI is setting new standards both in the field of text control and also automatic document indexing (AUTINDEX – automatic indexing).

Currently offering a large variety of language technology developments, products and services, IAI is an authoritative partner for industry when it comes to solving problems through the application of language technology and language engineering.

GFAI members benefit from a range of advantages:

  • GFAI members receive an annual report about IAI’s activities and research results and are thus provided with first-hand knowledge concerning the advances in the application of language technology in the commercial world.
  • In addition, one can participate in the annual general meeting where the annual report and the business plan for the next year are discussed. Here, members have the opportunity to introduce their own interests and propose new initiatives, projects and applications.
  • Finally, IAI’s highly qualified members of staff can provide one with expert advice in the field of language technology.
  • Thanks to the cooperation with the Saarland University (information science, translating and interpreting, computational linguistics) there are regularly students carrying out internships or writing their term paper or diploma theses as well as the activitiy of Ph.D. students.
  • This is a pool of young (but already proven) talent from which the GFAI members can also recruit, if need be, to meet their personnel requirements.

It is well worth companies and institutions who apply language technology or plan to do so in the near future gaining membership to the GFAI!
